Crutch Words


Crutch Words are fascinating. 

What are they?

Words frequently overused in your writing.

I discovered mine was soft and all derivatives - eg: softened, softening. 

Used it seven times in a 3,000 word short story!

The story made sense with them, but it was annoying. Needless to say, they were surgically replaced.

Talking to other writers: that, slightly, look, probably and seem are quite popular.

Removing Pronouns

  A couple of weeks back in the Tavistock Writers Group, Bob suggested an exercise to write a piece of poetry or fiction without using pronouns. After reaching for the bottle and a general slapping of heads, several of us gave it a go. What's that? What are pronouns - you know those words that take the place of a noun in a sentence. Pronouns are used to avoid repeating the same nouns over and over, making sentences less cumbersome and more fluid. Here are some common types of pronouns: Personal Pronouns : Refer to specific people or things. Eg: I, you, he, she, it, we, they Possessive Pronouns : Indicate ownership or possession Eg: my, your, his, her, its, our, their Reflexive Pronouns : Refer back to the subject of the sentence. Eg: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves Demonstrative Pronouns : Point to specific things. Winnie the Pooh Birthday

  Today (18th January) is the birthday of Winnie the Pooh, well actually his author A.A. Milne. And why shouldn't it be a bear's birthday too? Inspired by his son 'Christopher Robin', Winnie the Pooh was first published in a story in 1925, and subsequently in several books. Always enjoyed those stories and the poems. Credit must also go to E.H. Shepherd's wonderful original illustrations. Time to celebrate watching the movie 'Goodbye Christopher Robin' (2017) with a pot of honey. Oddly a week or so back, Bob, in the TWG mentioned a pod-cast where an actress read the A.A. Milne poem King John's Christmas. Quite longish, but very witty.
